Getting Ready for the Next Phase of Beyond Recycling in Wales

Back in January, we highlighted Wales’ Beyond Recycling strategy in our regulatory round-up, and flagged the 2026 update as one to watch.

With that update expected this month, the focus for many organisations is shifting from what might change to how prepared they are for it.

The direction of travel is already clear

  • More emphasis on reuse
  • Greater accountability across the lifecycle of materials
  • And increasing expectations on how services support circular outcomes

The question is whether current systems are set up for that shift

  • Are existing operations built around collection alone, or broader resource management?
  • Is there capacity to support reuse or alternative models if required?
  • How easily can services adapt if targets, processes or responsibilities change

For local councils across Wales, including many of our own customers, readiness is unlikely to come down to one big change. It will come from how flexible, joined-up and responsive current systems already are.

That’s something we think about a lot, how services and assets can adapt as requirements evolve without needing to start again each time.

We’ll be sharing our analysis once the refreshed strategy is published, and breaking down exactly what it means in practice for the sector. Follow Endurance for clear, practical updates as this develops.
