Scotland’s Bold Path Towards Zero Waste

WASTE management is a complex challenge and each UK nation’s approach differs. We’ve already discussed the English and Welsh strategies and now we’re turning our attention to Scotland and its ambitious ‘Zero Waste’ initiative.

Launched earlier this year, Scotland’s ‘Route Map’ outlines four key areas for action: Reduce and Reuse, Modernise Recycling, Decarbonise Disposal, and Strengthen the Circular Economy. These strategic pillars are designed to minimise waste and make better use of resources.

By 2025, Scotland aims to:

  • Recycle at least 70% of all waste.
  • Send a maximum of 5% waste to landfill.
  • Completely ban biodegradable municipal waste (BMW) from going into landfill.

Ambitious Goals, but Challenges Ahead

Scotland’s bold ambitions are clear – but the journey to zero waste is not without its challenges. For example; the ban on BMW in landfill is actually a delayed 2021 target – though it should be noted that, even in 2025, it’ll be the first UK nation to impose such measures. And concerns have also arisen about hitting the 70% target, as the current recycling rate has plateaued around 60% (currently 62.3%).

Scotland also seemed to be leading the UK in the rollout of a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) for bottles and cans – a move that would drastically reduce waste. However, after disagreement amongst the British nations on exactly which materials would be included, a perceived lack of infrastructure and amid a lawsuit following the collapse of the firm which was due to manage it – Circularity Scotland – the UK-wide scheme has also been delayed until 2027, making its eventual launch four years later than planned.
