Gearing up for endurance: the kit powering Mike Beck’s Arctic Circle Race
While Mike Beck is preparing his mind and body through rigorous training, surviving three days of gruelling cross-country skiing through the Arctic Circle will also require some seriously tough equipment!
The Arctic Circle Race (ACR) kit list is extensive. A backpack weighing up to 15kg, packed with overnight supplies such as a tent and a sleeping bag designed to withstand temperatures as low as -30°C (!!) will be transported between the base camp stops by the ACR team. However, Mike must carry a set of essential items with him at all times as he traverses the snow. These include an extra cap, gloves and face masks, highly protective sunglasses and suncream, a first aid kit, windproof jacket and trousers, hot drinks and energy bars and – crucially – a route map.

Borrow, Don’t Buy: The Smart Way to Gear Up
Mike has wisely opted to hire some of the more specialist equipment needed for this challenge and has found a local supplier in Cowbridge that specialises in mountain expeditions.
“Hiring the best quality equipment for the race made the most sense,” says Beck. “I was able to get expert advice on the kit needed for this kind of event, and it’s much more eco-friendly in the long run.”
At Endurance, we only operate the most modern and well-maintained specialist commercial vehicles, meaning our customers are also investing in the most reliable and eco-friendly fleet out there. Also, our Sales and Fleet Management team is always happy to offer expertise in helping them secure just the right equipment for the job – so we totally understand Mike’s rationale!
Maintenance Matters: Keeping the Kit in Top Shape
Given the demanding nature of the race, Mike’s skis will undergo significant wear over the 55km per day course. To ensure they remain in peak condition, he has opted for a maintenance package, meaning his skis will be serviced and rewaxed each evening, ensuring they are optimised for the day ahead. Much like our maintenance partners that operate across the UK, who are there for repairs and maintenance around the clock for our customers!
Can you help Mike to hit his £3,000 target?
Mike has now raised over half of his fundraising target. If you’d like to support Ice Cool Kids, a volunteer-run charity helping children with additional needs experience the joy of skiing, you can donate here
