The Countdown To The Deposit Return Scheme Has Begun
If you are responsible for keeping waste services running, the impact of the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) is already becoming a fleet planning decision.
The scheme will come into effect in October 2027, but the operational requirements will not appear overnight. Fleet capacity, service planning and vehicle availability need to be considered before demand increases, not once services are already under pressure.
DRS represents one of the biggest changes to UK recycling systems in recent years. Designed to increase recycling rates and improve material recovery, it will introduce new requirements for how drinks containers are collected and processed.
As James Mulligan, Operations Director at Endurance, explains:
“DRS will have a significant impact on fleet requirements for councils and waste operators. Dedicated collection streams will create additional demand for vehicles, making early fleet planning essential to maintaining service levels.
“Endurance’s approach has always been about thinking ahead to keep customers ahead. By securing vehicle build slots well in advance, we can help ensure customers have access to the fleet capacity needed as requirements evolve.
“However, readiness is not only about securing vehicles. It is about ensuring the right equipment, planning and support structures are in place so services can continue to perform as requirements change.”
At Endurance, preparation for Deposit Return Scheme is already underway. We have secured more than 140 vehicles ahead of demand, including Dennis chassis fitted with OL23-W bodies and trade lifters, providing the capacity and flexibility needed to support future collections.
By combining fleet capability with operational understanding, we help customers prepare for future requirements while protecting the continuity their services depend on.
DRS is a reminder that future fleet demands are often visible before they become operational pressures. The decisions made today will shape how effectively organisations respond tomorrow.
If you are responsible for fleet strategy, waste operations or service delivery and are preparing for DRS, we would welcome the conversation.
