Smarter Waste Management to Cut Methane Emissions
METHANE emissions may not make daily headlines, but their impact on the climate crisis is profound – and the waste sector is responsible for around 20% of them globally. In a new report, the Clean Air Task Force urges global governments to prioritise methane reduction from waste, calling for a fundamental shift in how waste is managed
The report emphasises that focused, strategic action can deliver rapid climate benefits – something already demonstrated by countries including Germany, Italy, and South Korea.
Separation at Source: A Simple but Powerful Step
Beyond limiting landfill and encouraging public behaviour change, one of the most effective tools is mandatory separation of organic waste – such as food and garden materials – at the point of collection. When kept out of landfill, these materials don’t produce methane through anaerobic decomposition.
At Endurance, we’re proud to support British councils with the fleet technology to make this happen. Our split-lift vehicles are designed to make kerbside separation easier, helping to prevent cross-contamination and improve recycling efficiency. It’s a practical, scalable way to reduce emissions right at the source.
How Far We’ve Come – and the Road Ahead
The UK is a signatory to the Global Methane Pledge, aiming to reduce methane emissions by 30% from 2020 levels by 2030. And while we’ve already cut emissions by over 62% since 1990, there’s still a long way to go.
“Councils across the UK are already working hard to tackle emissions from waste, but there’s still more to do – and at Endurance, we’re proud to be part of that effort,” says Neil Jeremiah, Managing Director of Endurance. “Reducing methane is vital to protecting our environment, and we’re committed to supporting local authorities in meeting this challenge head-on.”
