Rubbish behaviour: nearly one in six brits admit to littering in the past year

A new survey by Keep Britain Tidy has revealed a surprising – and slightly disappointing – truth: littering might be more common than we like to admit. Despite 85% of Brits saying they hate seeing rubbish on the streets, around eight million people confessed to littering in the past year alone.

A Little Litter Is a Big Problem

It’s a habit that doesn’t just spoil the view – it costs time, money, and has a real impact on our environment and sense of community. According to Keep Britain Tidy, more than two million pieces of litter are dropped in the UK every single day. And it’s not just small-scale mess: fly-tipping is on the rise too, with incidents in England increasing by 6% in 2024, based on the most recent figures.

Given that around three quarters of the Brits surveyed said that seeing litter in their communities makes them feel sad and angry, there is a clear need for action – from everyone. Whether it’s putting rubbish in the bin, reporting fly-tipping, or simply picking up after ourselves, small actions can make a big difference.
