Rethinking how specialist fleet is managed
Fleet planning has always been about replacing what you have. But what happens when what you need is changing too?
Fleet decisions have traditionally followed a clear cycle. A vehicle reaches the end of its useful life, a replacement is needed and a procurement process begins.
But fleet decisions are often made around the life of the asset, while service requirements are shaped by a much wider set of factors. Policy changes, evolving collection models and new infrastructure requirements can alter what operators need before existing assets are ready to be replaced.
The Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) is a good example of this shift. The challenge is not waiting for the requirement to arrive. It is recognising which decisions need to happen before there is a deadline forcing them. Decisions around capacity, contracts and fleet availability all have their own timescales. Waiting until a requirement becomes urgent can leave organisations making short-term choices in response to a long-term change.
As James Mulligan, Operations Director at Endurance, explains:
“This is why we built Endurance around an Equipment-as-a-Service model. We recognised that customers do not just need access to vehicles, they need a different way of managing fleet decisions over time.
“Traditional procurement often creates a point of ownership. A requirement is defined, an asset is supplied and responsibility moves back to the operator. But in a changing environment, that approach can leave too much distance between the asset and the service it supports.
“EaaS was built around closing that gap. It brings together the equipment, the support and the operational understanding needed to make better decisions throughout the life of the fleet.
“For us, the value is not created when a vehicle is delivered. It comes from understanding how requirements may change, how the fleet needs to perform and what support is needed to keep services moving.”
