Learning from the best: Recycling lessons from Austria, the World’s #1 ranked country
Having explored recycling strategies across the UK’s devolved nations (donโt miss our analysis of the English, Welsh, Scottish and N. Irish approaches) weโre rounding off this series by asking what we can learn from Austria, the world leader in recycling, and how these insights can inspire progress closer to home?

Ranked as the top country in the Global Recycling League Table, Austria demonstrates how effective policies and public engagement can drive success:
- ๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ๐ณ๐ถ๐น๐น ๐๐ฎ๐ป๐: Since 2004, Austria has prohibited the landfilling of waste with a total organic carbon (TOC) content of more than 5%.
- ๐๐ฎ๐๐ ๐๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐๐: Recycling points are widespread in urban and rural areas, making participation convenient for citizens.
- ๐๐ถ๐ด๐ต ๐๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ฐ ๐๐ป๐ด๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐: An impressive 96% of Austrians report separating general waste from packaging.
- ๐ง๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ต ๐๐๐๐ถ๐๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ: The MullApp (TrashApp) is a free mobile tool that provides residents with rubbish collection reminders and information

Eunomia Research & Consulting, which commissioned the Global Recycling League Table, highlights four key traits shared by top recycling nations:
- A clear, formal waste and recycling strategy with measurable targets.
- Systems for the separate collection of recyclables, including organic waste.
- Funding mechanisms based on the “polluter pays” principle.
- Financial and behavioural incentives to encourage recycling.
While the UK system already incorporates many of these, the reality is that we – and all nations – still have significant ground to cover to meet ambitious and essential recycling targets.

Any improvements in recycling across the UK will rely on having the right infrastructure in place – and that includes the vehicles working tirelessly to make it happen. At Endurance Vehicle Solutions, our fleet of specialist commercial vehicles is already on the ground, supporting councils, businesses, and communities in their recycling efforts.
As the push for higher recycling rates intensifies, our vehicles will continue to play a vital role in ensuring that waste management systems are robust, reliable, and ready for the challenges ahead.
- Commercial and Industrial Collections: For any paid collections from commercial or industrial premises, waste movements must be tracked starting from the producerโs site.
- Reduced Reporting: Information previously submitted manually through systems like WasteDataFlow will now be recorded directly in the new MDWT system – which should save time and increase information reliability.
As MDWTโs implementation date approaches, we expect more details to emerge.ย You can read more about MDWT in our latest article here.
