Northern Ireland Consultation Signals Next Steps for the Circular Economy
As governments across the UK continue to rethink how resources and waste are managed, we’re keeping a close eye on the changes shaping the sector across the UK – and what they mean in practice for service delivery
And one such shift is now taking shape in Northern Ireland, where the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) has launched a public consultation on a new resources and waste management strategy. The focus is on reducing waste, increasing recycling and keeping materials in use for longer: ambitions that many across the sector already support.
For those delivering services on the ground, and this is something we’re seeing play out across the UK & NI, the challenge is less about intent and more about readiness. Circular economy goals ultimately rely on operational systems: from infrastructure and treatment capacity to fleets that are reliable, adaptable and built for long-term use.
“We strongly support the direction of travel towards a more circular economy, but ambition alone isn’t enough,” says Neil Jeremiah, Managing Director at Endurance. “For circular strategies to succeed, councils need the right infrastructure and operational support in place. That means thinking long term about assets, fleets and systems – and making sure services are ready to adapt as expectations and regulations evolve.”
At Endurance, we see our role as supporting that transition in practical ways, helping councils across the UK & NI to maintain continuity today while preparing for change tomorrow. As strategies evolve, the opportunity lies in aligning circular ambition with the realities of everyday delivery.
We’d encourage our clients and contacts across Northern Ireland to take a look at the consultation and share their views.
