Less Than Two Weeks To Prepare For Digital Waste Tracking
If you’re responsible for waste operations at a council, there is less than two weeks to prepare for mandatory reporting through Digital Waste Tracking.
Digital Waste Tracking (DWT) will create a single system for recording how waste is received, replacing the different approaches currently used across the sector. Mandatory reporting begins in England, Wales and Northern Ireland in October 2026, with Scotland following in January 2027. In England, the current scope for local authorities covers sites handling commercial waste, while household waste deposited by residents at permitted HWRCs is excluded.
The government is encouraging permitted receiving sites to register and use the public beta before reporting becomes mandatory. That gives councils time to set up the service, decide who will be responsible for reporting and test how information will be submitted. From October, information on waste received will need to be reported within two working days.
And where contractors operate sites, responsibilities need to be established too. Councils also need to consider whether existing waste-management software can integrate with DWT or whether they will use the alternative spreadsheet route.
Councils need to understand not just what is changing, but what it means for their services. That is how we approach fleet support at Endurance. We look beyond the immediate requirement to understand what is changing around it, helping councils plan capacity and fleet requirements before new pressures become operational problems.
October is therefore less a starting point than a deadline for preparation. With less than two weeks to go, councils should be establishing responsibilities, testing their processes and understanding what the change means for their sites.
