Government announces £1.1 billion boost to improve recycling services across England
Communities across England are set to benefit from a major £1.1 billion government investment aimed at improving local recycling systems. In what will no doubt be seen as a step in the right direction by our customers across England, the funding aims to modernise waste collection services, enhance infrastructure, and reduce the volume of waste going to landfill or incineration.
New Rules Will See Producers Pay for Packaging Waste
This investment is part of the new Extended Producer Responsibility for Packaging scheme. Under the new rules, businesses will cover a fair share of the cost of recycling their packaging, with higher fees for materials that are difficult to recycle, and lower fees for reusable or easily recycled options.
The goal is to reduce single-use packaging, encourage innovation in sustainable design, and keep recyclable materials in circulation for longer – all while easing the burden on taxpayers and local councils.
Funding to Help Councils Modernise Waste Services
Councils are set to receive funding to build or upgrade household waste recycling facilities. As new requirements come into force, materials in circulation evolve, and – we hope – recently stagnated recycling rates increase, we expect to see changes in how waste is collected and processed across the UK.
