Global Waste Is Rising – The Opportunity Is Too

A new report from global environmental action organisation, WRAP, suggests global waste volumes could increase by more than 80% by 2050 compared with 2020 levels. That’s not a distant, abstract statistic: it’s a clear signal that pressure on systems, infrastructure and policy will intensify sharply over the coming decades.

Across OECD countries alone, waste generation has already increased by more than 100 million tonnes since 2000. And given that waste management activities are already estimated to contribute up to 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, the trajectory is clear: without more coordinated action, both environmental and operational strain will continue to grow.

Strong foundations need faster delivery

WRAP’s analysis highlights that the UK already has many of the building blocks required for a high-performing circular system: established collection infrastructure, regulatory frameworks and industry capability.

However, several key policy reforms first outlined as long ago as 2018 – including aspects of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), Deposit Return Schemes (DRS) and consistent collection reforms – are still not in place. As global waste pressures intensify, the issue is no longer ambition, but pace.

“Rising waste volumes underline why circular thinking isn’t optional, it’s essential,” says Neil Jeremiah, our Managing Director. “The UK has strong foundations, but progress depends on aligning policy ambition with operational readiness. Infrastructure, fleet capability and long-term planning all have a role to play if we’re serious about keeping materials in use for longer.”

A circular economy is not simply about increasing recycling rates. It requires systems designed to minimise waste at source, extend asset life and retain value in materials wherever possible – supported by infrastructure that can deliver consistently in practice.

From ambition to operational reality

At Endurance, we believe the next phase is about turning circular ambition into dependable delivery. As waste pressures grow globally, the UK has an opportunity not just to respond, but to lead through resilient infrastructure, accountable partnerships and practical long-term thinking.
