From Intention to Implementation: Simpler Recycling is Here

Simpler Recycling starts tomorrow, and for councils, the real work begins now.

From 31 March, local authorities across England will be required to move towards more consistent recycling systems, with a standard set of materials collected from households.

These include:

  • Plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays
  • Cartons
  • Paper and card
  • Metal packaging, such as aerosols and cans
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Weekly food waste collections

The intention is clear. Reduce variation, simplify systems and capture more recyclable material.

And the opportunity is significant. WRAP estimates that UK households throw away an average of 2.5 recyclable items per week, meaning around 2.3 billion items every year that could otherwise be collected and processed are going to waste.

For councils, the challenge now shifts to delivery. Systems, infrastructure and fleets will need to adapt to support increased volumes and more consistent collection requirements.

As Neil Jeremiah, Managing Director, puts it: “Consistency in what’s collected is a big step forward. The focus now is making sure services can deliver that reliably day in, day out, as volumes and expectations increase.”

At Endurance, we’ve been working with councils across the UK to prepare for these changes, and we’re here to support those still navigating the transition.
