England’s Simpler Recycling Scheme now imminent

The first phase of England’s Simpler Recycling scheme is set to take effect at the end of the month.

From 31 March 2025, most businesses and organisations – excluding micro-businesses with fewer than 10 employees – as well as non-domestic premises (such as schools and hospitals) must separate core waste streams for recycling and introduce weekly food waste collections.

Collection Specifics and Exemptions

Under the new rules, these businesses and organisations must ensure separate collections for:

  • Paper (including card and cardboard)
  • Plastic
  • Metal
  • Glass

This initiative aims to increase recycling rates and improve material quality by reducing contamination, helping England move towards the government’s ambitious target of 65% of all waste being reused or recycled by 2035.

There are certain exemptions where these requirements do not apply. We strongly advise checking the latest government guidance for full details.

Rollout for Local Authorities Due 31 March 2026

For local authorities, the enforcement of Simpler Recycling for domestic waste collection is now just a year away. Since our last update on this scheme, it has been great to see so many of our local council clients already preparing for the changes ahead.

“We are constantly updating our fleet – both in terms of the vehicles available and their configurations – to best support our customers as the legislation evolves,” says Stewart Gregory, Group Sales Director. “The move towards a more circular economy that protects our environment is essential in England and across the UK and our team is here to support local authorities and the vital work they do every step of the way.”
