Driving towards a more resilient future: water and the role of business

The Environment Agency (EA) has released its National Framework for Water Resources 2025 with the subtitle ‘water for growth, nature and a resilient future’ highlighting the essential role water plays in both our lives and livelihoods.

A Call for Shared Responsibility

The paper makes clear that resilient supplies of water are critical for all sectors; “Water resources planning is not exclusive to water companies,” it states. As a growing business – and through our local authority customers who hire water division vehicles that draw directly on local water supplies – we believe it’s essential to recognise our responsibility and play an active role.

Understanding the Non-Household Role

Non-households account for around 20% of water put into supply by water companies and the EA has identified demand reduction in this sector as a key component of achieving overall water efficiency.

The Environmental Improvement Plan (EIP) sets a clear challenge:

  • A 15% reduction by 2050
  • A 9% reduction in non-household water use by 2038 (from 2019/20 levels)

However, current data suggests we are falling short. The EA emphasises the need for non-household customers to use water responsibly and efficiently, with awareness of water scarcity being a vital first step in establishing a common understanding of the need to reduce water use. It also notes that this must be done alongside a focus on economic growth.

Our Commitment to Efficiency

The EA wants to achieve reliable access to environmentally sustainable water supplies that underpin a vibrant economy and enable growth – and it’s a vision we’re proud to support. “We take our environmental responsibilities seriously and understand the role we can play in supporting national water resilience. That’s why we continue to invest in high-specification water division vehicles that minimise waste, improve operational efficiency, and offer more predictable water usage due to reduced downtime,” says Neil Jeremiah, Managing Director at Endurance. “Efficiency isn’t just about performance – it’s about impact, and we’re proud to support our customers in achieving both.”

At Endurance, we’ll continue to follow the evolving landscape of water strategy closely, and work to support our customers with efficient, reliable solutions that respect our shared environment.
