Chocolate, cheer and smarter recycling this Easter
Easter (or Pasg, as we call it here in Wales) is always a joyful time, but it can also lead to a spike in household waste. This year, Brits are expected to have consumed over 123 million (yes, million!) chocolate eggs, potentially generating as much as 8,000 tonnes of packaging waste.
And while a recent survey has revealed that a third of Brits aren’t sure exactly which Easter egg packaging can be recycled, we’re happy to say that most of it can be! Here’s a quick run-down:
Cardboard boxes with plastic inserts
Most Easter eggs come packaged in these, and both materials can go straight into your kerbside recycling. Just make sure to separate the components and flatten the boxes to save space in your bin.
- Plastic-free packaging – or even unwrapped eggs – are available, so keep an eye out for those even greener options next year!
Foil wrappers
The colourful foil wrapping around chocolate eggs is also recyclable. Simply scrunch it into a ball before placing it in your recycling bin.
- If the foil bounces back open when scrunched, it’s laminated and needs to go in your general waste bin instead
Plastic wrappers & cellophane
If you were lucky enough to receive a big Easter gift basket or individually wrapped sweets, the plastic packaging can’t go into recycling. While some local councils offer collection bags for flexible plastics, in most areas the easiest option is to take them to your nearest supermarket.
