Battery Fires: A Growing Threat to the UK’s Waste Sector

After incidents of battery fires in the UK’s waste and recycling sector increased by 71% YoY to hit more than 1,200 in 2024, the Environmental Services Association (ESA) has issued a report stating that the problem is now at “epidemic levels.”

As well as putting frontline waste workers and vital infrastructure at risk, these fires are estimated to cost the economy over £1 billion annually.

Why Are Batteries Ending Up in the Wrong Bin?

Lithium-ion batteries, found in everyday items from phones to vapes, are responsible for almost half of all waste fires because, when they are crushed or punctured in the recycling process, they can ignite – with devastating consequences.

Despite this, nearly one in five people admit to binning batteries incorrectly, and most say they are unsure how to dispose of them safely. This alongside limited convenient recycling options often leaves households choosing the easiest route – putting batteries in the bin.

The Case for Policy Reform

The ESA is calling for mandatory kerbside collection of batteries and small electricals across England. This could save an estimated £6 billion over the next decade, recover valuable materials and, most importantly, protect waste sector staff. Research by environmental consultancy Eunomia also highlights the potential to retrofit existing collection vehicles with external containers for safe storage – a practical solution we at Endurance are actively assessing.

“Our customers’ frontline teams across the UK are facing unacceptable risks from fires caused by incorrectly disposed batteries,” says Neil Jeremiah, Managing Director. “We fully support the ESA’s call for policy reforms that make safe recycling easier, and we are committed to exploring solutions that protect both our people and the communities they serve.”
