After the festive indulgence: Time to tackle food waste
As the festive season fades, the new year offers a chance to tackle persistent challenges – and food waste is a big one. With Brits discarding over 10 million tonnes of food annually, the Government’s new £15m food waste fund is a welcome initiative to address this issue head-on.
Straight to the Source of Wasted Food
Most food waste in the UK comes from households. Our fleet deals with this kind of waste daily, collecting it from curbsides and transporting it to recycling centres across the country. However, farms are the second largest contributor, responsible for 15% of the nation’s food waste. This new fund, which includes £20,000 grants for charities working with farmers, will help tackle waste directly at its source, making a meaningful impact where it’s needed most.

A Broader Vision
This funding isn’t just about reducing waste. It’s tied to the Government’s wider ambitions to “kick-start economic growth” by boosting the rural economy and embracing a circular economy where resources are reused and waste is minimised. It’s also a crucial step towards meeting the UK’s commitment to halve food waste by 2030, and key to achieving that is the introduction of mandatory household food waste collections from March 2026.
