When Should You Consider Updating Your Fleet?
For councils managing their own fleet, replacement decisions rarely arrive at a convenient time. Even when vehicles are still working reliably, that doesn’t necessarily mean keeping them is the best decision for the service.
Collection requirements, regulations and the way a service is delivered can all change. That can affect everything from the specification required to the number and type of vehicles needed to meet those requirements. A fleet that works well for today’s needs may therefore need to be reconsidered as the service develops.
We asked James Mulligan, Operations Director at Endurance, for his thoughts.
“I would start with what the service needs from the fleet over the period ahead. That means looking at how the fleet is performing now, what it is costing to operate and maintain and whether the current specification still meets what the service requires.”
“Updating your fleet gives you the opportunity to reconsider what you need from it. There is an immediate financial commitment, but you may also be gaining greater predictability around maintenance and a specification that better suits the service. If the requirements have changed or are likely to, there may be little value in simply replacing the existing fleet like for like.”
If you’re reviewing your fleet and unsure which option makes most sense for your service, we can help you work through the decision. We’ll look at what the service needs, how the fleet is performing and what the different options mean for the operation, with no obligation to proceed.
