UK mandatory digital waste tracking (MDWT) delayed by another year

The rollout of mandatory digital waste tracking across the UK has been delayed by a year, with implementation now expected in April 2026 rather than next month.

Ongoing Delays and Industry Concerns

Despite all four devolved governments emphasising their commitment to a “robust, high-quality digital waste tracking service that will be instrumental in our transition to a circular economy,” senior officials from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the Scottish Government, the Welsh Government, and Northern Ireland’s Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) have confirmed the deferral. It is also worth noting that the government’s recently updated statement does not explicitly confirm that the system will be mandatory at the point of introduction.

As we reported back in November 2024, the scheme had already faced significant delays. The recent decision follows concerns from industry stakeholders that even this revised timeline would be “exceptionally difficult” to prepare for, given the complexity of transitioning to the new system.

The Need for Modernised Waste Management

Once operational, the digital tracking service is expected to provide more accurate data on waste generation and disposal, strengthen efforts to combat waste crime, and reduce illegal activities such as fly-tipping—an issue that continues to grow, with incidents in England rising by 6% in 2024, according to the latest figures. The system is also intended to address misclassification and unauthorised disposal, making waste management more transparent and efficient.

Neil Jeremiah, Endurance Management Director, expressed disappointment at the delay, stating:

“At a time when the UK urgently needs to advance towards a more circular economy, this postponement is frustrating. However, if used wisely, this extra time could help ensure the system has the maximum positive impact once it goes live.”
